Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a common problem that typically causes pain in the heel. The pain is caused by inflammation in the thick band of tissue that connects the heel bone to the rest of the foot and the toes.

Stretching exercises are often enough to treat this condition. For more serious cases, a combination of physical therapy, splints, and orthotic equipment can be useful as well.

Bunions are painful bony bumps on the base of the big toe. They can be caused and aggravated by tight shoes, genetics and a number of other factors.

Simple cases can be treated with different footwear, pain medication and ice. More serious cases may require surgery to remove the tissue or adjusting the bone itself.

Foot and Ankle Sprains

Sprains are caused by over-stretched or torn ligaments in the foot or ankle.

Minor sprains can be treated at home with rest, ice and compressions. More serious cases might require painkillers, crutches and elevations of the sprained area.

Fractures are defined as either small cracks in the bone, or significant and severe bruising inside of a bone. The foot and ankle are at higher risk of fractures due to the constant heavy use they endure on a daily basis.

Treatment for fractures depends on the severity of the fracture. Minor fractures can be treated with protective footwear and casts. More serious fractures might require the surgical insertion of supportive fasteners in the foot.

Skin and Nail Conditions

Fungus and ingrown nails are common foot conditions. Fungus is caused when infections get through cracks in the toenail, while ingrown toenails often occur due to tight shoes or improper nail trimming.

Treatment for minor fungus usually involves an antifungal cream, while more serious cases might require surgical removal of the area. Ingrown toenails are either treated with foot soaking and alternative footwear, or minor surgery for more serious cases.

Foot Care for Seniors

Seniors often have additional foot care issues that need to be addressed. These include treatment and prevention of warts, corns, neuromas and spurs, among others.

Proactive care and regular visits to the podiatrist can minimize the impact of these conditions.
